Port St Mary
Date made: 1901
Description: “On my arrival [at Port St Mary] every man seemed bustling and active, and whether baling water out of his own boat, laying rope in neat coils upon the shore, moving from place to place under a heavy load of net upon his shoulder, or engaged in any other portion of diligent labour, at all events, every single individual was booted like a rhinoceros.” (Sir George Head, A Home Tour through Various Parts of the United Kingdom, 1837, M 02445)
The painting is from a series of works by Mrs Lucy Emma Lynam, born 1834. It is thought that Lucy Emma Lynam painted the works while staying with her daughter and son-in-law on the Isle of Man. Her daughter, also called Lucy Emma, married a Manxman Sidney Alfred Pizey Kermode, who was the Reverend of Onchan (1862-1925).
