Corn stooks
Date made: c.1860
Description: “So much corn is grown in the Isle, that they are enabled to export a great deal. The imports, if consumed on the Island, are duty-free; which makes tea, wine, sugar, salt and many other things extremely cheap.” (Miss Weeton, Journal of a Governess, May 25th 1812, M 08236)
Miss Georgina Gore Currie was the niece of Horatio Powys, Bishop of Sodor and Man from 1854 to 1877. Georgina stayed with the Bishop’s family at their residence, Bishopscourt, north of Kirk Michael. During her time on the Isle of Man, Georgina sketched and painted many Manx scenes including Bishopscourt and its gardens.
