Peel looking south from Castle to Peel Hill
Date made: 1855
Description: “On top of the horse hill [Peel Hill] is a noble and sublime view. Its surface, when I visited it just previous to the herring fishery, was for acres covered with the wide spread nets of the fishermen, in order to prepare them for the ensuing season.” (John Feltham, A tour through the Island of Mann in 1797 and 1798, M 09791)
Miss Georgina Gore Currie was the niece of Horatio Powys, Bishop of Sodor and Man from 1854 to 1877. Georgina stayed with the Bishop’s family at their residence, Bishopscourt, north of Kirk Michael. During her time on the Isle of Man, Georgina sketched and painted many Manx scenes including Bishopscourt and its gardens.
