Ronaldsway Village Fish Hook
Date made: Viking: 800-1265
Description: Vikings had to carry out everyday tasks, just like everyone else, to feed themselves. This is a one thousand year old Viking fishing hook, found during excavations at Ronaldsway. It is made from iron and looks similar to the kind of hooks still used today.
Once the Vikings had settled in one place, they would have to learn how to sustain themselves and their families using the local resources. Fish would have supplemented the usual diet of meat, vegetables and bread
In addition to hook-and-line fishing, Vikings had their own dedicated fishing boats. Although they were much smaller than the famous longships, the boats would have been able to carry small nets and pots. Fish caught would have been dried and stored until needed.
