Memorial Plaque
Date made: 1662
Description: Engraved brass tablet/ plaque once nailed over the door of Kissack's Smithy, Crosby. 'In certaine hope of Resurrection/Here resteth the body of Henry Crowther/late of Eland who departed this life February/the 16th and was interred the 19th of the same/month Anno Domini 1662/Aetatis suq 21 yeare 20 weekes/Moriendo renascor'. Eland = Elland, near Halifax (almost certainly). Crowther is a not uncommon West Riding name, but Elland parish register for 1662/3 does not include Henry Crowther, so he may have left the parish before his death (Dr J.S.Purvis, St Anthony's Hall, York. Letter 9.xi.1955). It has been suggested that Crowther may have died on the Isle of Man but there is apparently no evidence for this in either parish registers or wills.
Note written on back that plaque was presented to Manx Museum per Mrs G.M.Quilliam of Manx Folk Life Survey.
