Cronk Mooar Viking Burial Sword

Date made: Viking

Description: The pommel and upper guard are both decorated with inlaid wire, attached to a wooden grip. The blade is still in its protective scabbard, but seems to be double-edged with a fuller down the middle.

The scabbard itself is made from leather (which seems to have been decorated), inside of which is cloth, then two boards of wood sit either side of the blade which was covered in cloth. There are traces of copper alloy mounts on the scabbard to attach the sword to a sling or strap.

The blade of the sword was broken, but it may be the result of pressure of the earth when the wooden box collapsed, rather than being deliberately broken before burial.

Type is S as categorised by Peterson (1919).
