Cronk Mooar Viking Burial Cloak Fragments

Date made: Viking

Description: Fragments of the cloak that the Viking of Cronk Mooar was buried with have survived.

They show a garment that was relatively light, but which would have been incredibly warm. It was made from thick, local wool – probably Loaghtan – tightly woven but with loops of wool through the weave to give a shaggy appearance. A small area shows evidence of darning with a needle, whch might be a contemporary repair.

The Viking may have been buried wearing the cloak or it may have been laid over the body or used as a shroud.
