Douglas Camp internee-made book shelf

Date made: 1916

Description: A small wooden (oak) book shelf made in Douglas Internment Camp in 1916 by internee no. 3145. The book shelf has carved ends with a three legs design with four shamrocks and the inscription 'Douglas Camp 1916' on each end. The base of the book shelf has the pyrography inscription 'Angef. vom Kriegsgef. No. 3145 Douglas I.o.M. 1916'. The book shelf can be dismantled into 4 pieces and 'flatpacked' for storage, transit and comprises two carved ends and a base and back board. The book shelf was dismantled by the donor for posting to Manx National Heritage and has strips of sanding paper adding as wedges to hold the boards and ends together and has brass screws on inside of the carved ends.

Internee no. 3145 is listed in the Douglas Camp Day Book as Johann Harsetmann, a German who entered Douglas Internment Camp in September/ October 1914 and was transferred to Alexandra Palace, 16th January 1919.
