Castle Rushen Stores Wig Curler
Date made: 16th century
Description: One of the more unusual artefacts in the collections, this is a three hundred year old hair accessory. It was found in 1992 and is a wig-curler. It is made from clay and would have originally been the same shape at both ends, looking like a dumbbell.
Pieces of damp paper would have been wrapped over many of these, then strands of the hair of the wig would be wrapped around the middle and the whole lot then baked at a low heat in an oven. And voila, an en-vogue curly wig to stroll round Castletown in the 1700s!
