Robert Pohl appearing in a theatre production at Knockaloe
Date made: 1916
Artist: unknown artist
Description: The theatre held a special place in the life of internees in Knockaloe. Not only were cast and audiences transported to another less troubled world for a brief interlude during each performance, but the production of costumes as well as elaborate sets also provided an outlet and an occupation for prisoners of differing abilities.
This oil on canvas portrait of Robert Pohl, in the title role as Li Wu in a camp theatre production, was given to him by his friends for his birthday in 1917. It illustrates both the quality of the costumes created in the camps, and the skill of the artists at work there.
