View of the South Coast of the Isle of Man, from Langness

Date made: August 1834

Artist: Goodman, Mary Anne

Description: “The coast here is very flat and the view would be tame, did not the towering height of Spanish Head form a majestic background and the town and Castle of Rushen which last gives the modern name of Castletown to what was called Rushen, making an interesting middle view.” (Illustrated account of Mrs Emma Cram's 1842 visit to the Isle of Man, MS 13029)

A pencil sketch from the old family sketch book of Sir Arnold Wilson, the elder son of Canon J.M. Wilson. The artist was Mrs Mary Anne Goodman, an aunt of Canon Wilson, on his mother's side. Her maiden name was Pears. The sketches were made round about 1835, when Sir Arnold's grandfather, the Reverend Edward Wilson, was Principle of King William's College. On the artwork various points are named in ink at the top from the Stack to St Ann's Head and at the bottom from Castletown to the Old Fort and St Catherine's Chapel.
