Claverton

Date made: 22 June 1823

Artist: Goodman, Mary Anne

Description: A pencil sketch from the old family sketch book of Sir Arnold Wilson, the elder son of Canon J.M. Wilson. The artist was Mrs Mary Anne Goodman, an aunt of Canon Wilson, on his mother's side. Her maiden name was Pears. The sketches were made round about 1835, when Sir Arnold's grandfather, the Reverend Edward Wilson, was Principle of King William's College.

A note on the back of the work states "from the carriage in which we carried Dr Cratch over the hill and almost shook him to death. Papa rode with us and we called at Major S[]'s. Dr C made a painting of this and gave it to Papa." Papa is thought to be Reverend James Pears and this is probably a village near Bath.
