Date made: 1940
Description: Pencil sketch produced by the donor's father Alfred Schwarzchild whilst en route to the Isle of Man, 1940 (he was a professional artist, forced to flee Germany by the Nazis). Ink and pencil sketch with partial colouring, showing prisoners washing in buckets outside tents whilst a sentry with tin helmet watches over them. Possibly a transit camp on way to the Isle of Man. Produced on lined exercise paper. Plain reverse.
Background:
There were many celebrated modern artists interned on the Isle of Man during the Second World War, they were forced to flee Nazi Germany as the regime suppressed so called ‘degenerate’ art. Jewish artists were doubly vulnerable. Manx National Heritage have an internationally significant collection of works created in the internment camps, with many of those artists going on to have high profile careers after the war.
