Framed oil painting original artwork for The Deemster

Date made: 1887

Description: Framed oil painting, the original cover artwork for Hall Caine's book The Deemster, which was published in 1887. Shows a man in shackles kneeling before what may be a Deemster (though he appears more like a Druid) wearing coloured robes standing on a reduced version of Tynwald Hill. It was Caine's third novel, the second to be set in the Isle of Man and it was his first great success. The plot revolves around the reckless actions of Dan Mylrea and the exile and atonement that follow. This is likely to be from the 1924 uniform edition of the book, as this and four others appear to be a set.

It is signed 'R. Marsh Brown Carlton'. R Marsh Brown (1898-1954) was an illustrator active in the early 20th century. Other cover illustrations by him are known.
