Framed oil painting original artwork for The Prodigal Son

Date made: 1887

Description: Framed oil painting, the original cover artwork for Hall Caine's book The Prodigal Son, which was published in 1904. In The Prodigal Son Magnus learns on his wedding day that his bride, Thora, is in love with his brother Oscar, a composer. She marries Oscar after Magnus releases her from the engagement. When Thora dies, a distraught Oscar places the only copies of his compositions in her coffin. Later he has her grave opened and his music retrieved. It is set in a sheep-rearing community in rural Iceland, with scenes in London and the French Riviera.

The artwork shows a man in skis crossing a snowy terrain. This is likely to be from the 1924 uniform edition of the book, as this and four others appear to be a set. It is signed F.Gardner.
