Description: Framed oil painting, the original cover artwork for Hall Caine's book The Christian, which was published in 1897. The Christian was the first novel in Britain to have sold over a million copies. The book was inspired by Rossetti's verses 'Mary Magdalene at the Door of Simon The Pharisee,' Mainly set in Victorian London, it is the story of Glory Quayle, a young woman living an independent life who becomes an actress, and John Storm, who enters the priesthood. It was the first time that Hall Caine had entered the ongoing debate over the role and rights of women.
This artwork appeared on the March 1924 uniform edition of the book. it is not known if it was also used on earlier editions. It shows a girl in sailor-style costume standing atop a cliff edge, a pier is visible below. The work is signed by Septimus E.Scott (1879-1965) who painted widely, from propaganda posters in the First World War to advertising and railway posters in the 1920s and 30s. He also provided illustrations for books including works by Dickins.
