Biography: Walter Forbes had been a member of the Liverpool Scottish for a number of years prior to the First World War. Upon the outbreak of war in 1914 he tried to volunteer for active service, but was told that as he was over 50 he was too old. The army however still had a use for Forbes, and he was posted to the Isle of Man to help set up and run the internment camps which would house German, Turkish and Austrian internees over the coming years.
