Biography: John Smith was originally from Manchester, but lived at Queen Street, Castletown. Before the First World War was employed by a farmer at Scarlett. He enlisted in the Lancashire Fusiliers in October 1915 and was posted to France to the 11th battalion the following June. He was killed in action on 9 July 1916, aged 38, and left a widow and five children. (Image ref: PG/13743/30).
