Biography: William Moore was born in Castletown, but after serving his apprenticeship in the town, left to run a large butcher's business in Liverpool. He joined the army in 1917, and was posted to the 2nd battalion South Lancashire Regiment. He died in hospital in France, of pneumonia, in January 1918. Large numbers of British soldiers were invalided home sick with illnesses such as bronchitis, which were linked to exposure as a result of winters spent in the front line, with little protection from the cold and rain.
