Biography: Captain W.A.W. Crellin came from a prosperous family in the north of the Isle of Man. Their home was Ballachurry, in Andreas. Crellin was commissioned as an officer in the Notts & Derbys Regiment before the First World War, and took part in some of the earliest battles in France. As the war progressed he was awarded the Distinguished Service Order and bar, and was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel in command of a battalion. He was killed in action in 1918, aged 25. He is buried in Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery, Belgium. (Image ref: PG/13726/1).
