Epithet: Soldier in the 6th Dragoons
Record type: First World War Biographies
Biography: Edward James Caley of Douglas was among the first men from the Isle of Man to enlist in the army, upon the outbreak of war in 1914. He joined the 6th Dragoons, a cavalry regiment, though by the time he reached France in 1915, the Western front had stagnated into trench warfare. Cavalrymen were now frequently deployed as infantry, serving in the trenches, and it was in this capacity that Caley was serving when he was killed, on 1 April 1918. He is commemorated on the Pozieres memorial to the missing. (Image ref: PG/7394).
