John Thomas Quilliam
Epithet: Acting Chief Constable of the Isle of Man
Record type: First World War Biographies
Biography: Superintendent John Thomas Quilliam was from Peel, and during his police career he worked his way up to the rank of Superintendent. It was said that he knew the name of every policeman who served under him. During the First World War, with the Chief Constable Colonel Madoc occupied with running Douglas Internment Camp, Quilliam took over his police duties. His most challenging moment came during the July 1918 general strike, when his skills of persuasion and conciliation prevented the strong feelings of the strikers from spilling over into violence.
