Biography: Jack Bregazzi was employed before the First World War in the Post Office in Douglas as a telegraph messenger boy. He enlisted in the army towards the end of the First World War, joining the Royal Engineers signal service (the fore runners of the Royal Corps of Signals). In this service he would need to be fluent in morse code, as well as other forms of signalling such as semaphore and heliograph. Signallers wore a blue and white brassard on the right sleeve to distinguish them, the colours derviving from those of semaphore flags.
