Roy Evans

Record type: Motorsport Biographies

Biography: Mounts: Junior—A.J.S.
Senior—Matchless.

Age 41, Owestry’s Roy Evans finished twelfth in the 1951 Senior T.T., averaging 83.37 m.p.h., and with Geoff Duke and Albert Moule made up the winning club team. In the Junior race he came home 42nd. Roy, a motor engineer, averaged 82.80 m.p.h. to take 16th place in the 1950 Senior T.T.—than his speed for the same event which was some two m.p.h. faster the previous year, but once place down in the prize list! He also rode an A.J.S. into 30th place of the Junior that year.

In 1947 he was sixth in the T.T.—thanks to a Douglas asseur! Roy had a bad spill on the second practice morning, and aches and pains looked like making him a nonstarter until the masseur came along. Before the war Roy had several successes in Ireland.

In 1952 he was 20th, on an A.J.S., in the Junior, and 14th, on a Norton in the Senior. He was absent from the T.T. last year.

His business is his hobby—plus a little golf—plus “birds’ nesting” while looking for the ball.

Junior - A.J.S.
Senior - Norton

Age 39, Oswestry’s Roy Evans finished twelfth in last year’s Senior T.T., averaging 83.37 m.p.h., and with Geoff Duke and Albert Moule made up the winning Club team. In the Junior race he came home 42nd. Roy, a motor engineer, averaged 82.80 m.p.h. to take 16th place in the 1950 Senior T.T. – which was some two m.p.h. faster than his speed for the same event the previous year, but one place down in the prize list! He also rode an A.J.S. to 30th place of the Junior that year.

In 1947 he was sixth in the T.T. – thanks to a Douglas masseur! Ray had a bad spill on the second practice morning, and aches and pains made him look like a non-starter, until the masseur came along. Before the war Roy had several successes in Ireland.

His business is his hobby – plus a little golf – plus “birds’ nesting” while looking for the ball.

This year he rides a 1949 A.J.S. 7R in the Junior, the one ridden by Freddie Hawkins in the last two Juniors, and the “Featherbed” 500 Norton that we saw him on last June.

George Lathe, of Wolverhampton, enters him.

Mounts: Junior – B.S.A.
Senior – Norton

Age 37, Roy Evans is a motor engineer, of Gobowen, Oswestry.

He had several successes in pre-war Irish races, and in the Senior T.T. of 1947 finished sixth. This was after a bad crash on the second Practice morning which prevented him from turning out for further practice, and it was only due to the excellent work of a Douglas masseur that he was able to ride in the race. Last year he rode an A.J.S. in the Junior and a Norton in the Senior, finishing 30th in the former at 76.88 m.p.h. and 15th in the latter at 80.59 m.p.h. and winning first-class replicas in both.

Describes his hobby as “my business” – whether this means his business as a motor engineer, or that it is no business of the Editor’s, is not clear!

His machine for the Junior is a B.S.A. Gold Star. He writes: “I am very impressed with the performance of these Junior B.S.A.s, so intend to give one an airing in the Junior and try to get a silver replica.” His Senior mount is a 500 double-knocker Norton.

He is entered by George Lathe for the Senior and is a private entry for the Junior.
