Ted Frend

Record type: Motorsport Biographies

Biography: Mounts: Junior—Norton.
Senior—Norton.

Age 37, a company director, living at Southfields, London, S.W. 18, Ted Frend rode at Brooklands before the war, and in 1939 won a Gold Star with a speed of 110 m.p.h. on a Vincent H.R.D.

He first rode in the T.T. in 1947, finishing fourth in the Senior on a Norton. In 1948 he joined the official A.J.S. team, but had little luck in the T.T., retiring at Glen Helen on the second lap in the Junior and at Ballig on the first lap in the Senior. In 1949, similarly mounted, he finished eighth in the Junior T.T., winning a first-class replica. In the Senior event on the following Friday he crashed at Glen Helen and retired. He wound the season up by finishing second to Les Graham in the Brooklands 100 miles race at Silverstone in October.

In 1950, again riding Ajays, he started off well by winning the 350 c.c. class at the A.C.U. Blandford meeting in April. In the Junior T.T. he came into fifth place on the third lap and retained this position to the end, averaging 83.88 m.p.h. In the Senior race of the following Friday he finished fifteenth at 83.09 m.p.h., after a slow last lap.

Going over to the Continent, he came in seventh in the 350 class of the Belgian Grand Prix, and a couple of hours later was third in the 500 class at 100.33 m.p.h. By recording this speed he has the distinction of being the first British rider to finish an International race at over 100 m.p.h.

He did not compete in major races during 1951-’52, but returned to the Isle of Man last year retiring on the last lap of the Junior race and finishing seventh, on a Norton, in the Senior event, to gain a “silver.” His entrant this year in Harold Daniell.

He first rode in the T.T. in 1947 when on a 499 Norton he put himself “on the map” in no uncertain fashion. He was on the leader board for each lap, varying between sixth, fifth and fourth positions, and finished the race fourth positions, and finished the race fourth at 81.57 m.p.h., less than three minutes behind the winner. In 1948 he joined the official A.J.S. team, but had little luck in the T.T. retiring at Glen Helen on the second lap in the Junior and at Ballig on the first lap in the Senior.

Last year, similarly mounted, he finished eighth in the Junior T.T. after a comparatively slow first lap averaging 81.03 m.p.h. for the race and winning a first-class replica.
In the Senior event on the following Friday he dead-heated for the lead on the first lap with Les Graham, being again bracketed first on the second lap, this time with both Graham and Bob Foster.

In the third lap he dropped back to second place, eight seconds behind Foster but twelve in front of Graham, and then crashed at Glen Helen and retired. He wound the season up by finishing second to Les Graham in the Brooklands 100 miles race at Silverstone last October.

This year he has already shown good form, having won the 350 c.c. class at the A.-C.U. Blandford meeting last April.
