Age 25, J. L. Payne is a master builder and comes from Chislehurst, Kent. He has been racing on most short circuits in England since 1955 with moderate successes, and has ridden in the I.o.M. Southern “100” – in 1957 he was third in the 500 c.c. class and in 1958 was second in the “250” and fifth in the “350.” In 1958, too, he rode in the 350 c.c. Snaefell race and came in second on his Norton at 81.89 m.p.h., whilst in the Junior Manx Grand Prix of the following day he finished 26th at 81.65 m.p.h., and collected a replica. Last year on a Norton, he finished 22nd in the Junior Manx at 84.69 m.p.h. with a replica, but retired in the Senior.
