Biography: Age 23, William James Sawford is a lorry driver from Belvedere, Kent and made his MGP debut in 1956. He started racing with a Triumph in 1953 and since then he has had a fair amount of success, including a win in the 1955 non-experts' race at Thruxton and first, second, fourth and seventh places at various other meetings. At Silverstone Trophy Day in 1956 he won his heat and was third in the final after stopping on the first lap with gearbox trouble. The same year he finished 37th in the Junior Manx and 12th in the Senior sharing the Newcomer's Award with R.H. Lilley and T. Thorp. He was a non-starter in both last year's Manx races.
