Senior - Norton
Age 28, Ray Travers comes from Pietermaritzburg, Natal, where he is a motor mechanic.
His only previous Island visit was in 1953, when he finished 25th in the Senior T.T, but he has had extensive experience of racing in South Africa. He has competed in every major road race held there, and has won many, such at the Natal “100”, the Transvaal Championship, the East London Winter Meeting, the International Road Races at Laurenco Marques, the Nigel Round-the-Houses, the Junior event in the “Parkhill 120”, etc.
His 350 c.c. Featherbed Norton reached him in South Africa towards then end of 1952. He rode it in the Port Elizabeth “200” on January 1st, 1953, and finished third in the 350 c.c. class. A few weeks later he was selected to represent South Africa in the 1953 T.T. races, so he promptly shipped the machine back to England in its original crate!
Last year he was winner of the 350 c.c. Natal Championship and was third in the May Nigel meeting.
Hobbies: Swimming, tennis, fishing, and game hunting during the season.
