Age 22, Mick Featherstone, who comes from Skegness, Lincs is one of the “finds” of this year’s TT races.
His first race was at Dunholme in the Hutchinson “100” of October 1947, where riding a standard Triumph Speed Twin, he led at the start but later retired with a puncture.
He first competed over the TT course on a Triumph in the 1949 Clubman’s Senior, in which he retired on the second lap. In the same event last year, similarly mounted, he made fourth fastest lap in practice in 28 mins 43 secs and was fifth on the first lap of the race, after which he retired. Three months later he rode a Norton in the Senior Manx Grand Prix and was second to Peter Romaine throughout the race, his finishing speed being 82.8 mph.
After the “Manx” he turned to Ajays and rode in both 350 and 500cc Invitation Races at Bemsee’s “Soaking Saturday” Silverstone meeting on 30th September. In the former race he was brought off by a rider who had crashed in front of him, but was unhurt and later rode the Porcupine in the 500cc Invitation event, finishing a good second at 64.59 mph to J.P.E Hodgkin (Vincent).
In short circuit events this year he has already been in the picture, although he has not scored any wins. At “Motor Cycling’s” Goodwood Saturday he came off on the Porcupine in the 500cc Championship race, but was unhurt and later finished second to Geoff Duke in the 350cc Championship event.
In the 50-mile race at Eppynt last month, after running second for nine laps to Dickie Dale (Norton) he was passed by Cecil Sandford (Velocette) on the last lap, and finished third, less than two seconds behind him.
Hobbies: Swimming and ice skating.
He is a works member of the AJS team in both races.
