Age 40, Louis Gilbert won three replicas at Donington in pre-war racing, which he began in 1937. An engineer from Barrow-in-Furness, he rode in the 1939 N.W. “200” and finished second in the 350 c.c. class, and second again in the open handicap. He competed and finished in the Manx Grands Prix of 1946, ’47, and ’48, winning a replica in the Junior race of last year. Louis entered for the 1949 T.T., but was a non-starter. In the 1950 T.T. he rode a Norton into 47th place of the Junior event at a speed of 74.93 m.p.h. In 1951 he was averaging 78 m.p.h. when forced to retire in the fifth lap of the Junior T.T. with engine trouble. In 1952 he was more unlucky still—he retired in the Junior race on the first lap, but last year he managed to shake off his bad luck and brought his A.J.S. into 40th place in the Junior, winning a bronze replica.

He is a keen photographer. He enters himself for this year’s Junior, and is riding an A.J.S. 7R.

Mount: Junior – Norton
Age 37, Louis Gilbert has been racing since 1937 and won three replicas at Donington pre-war. He rode in the 1939 North-West “200” and was second in the 350 class and second again in the open handicap. Competed in the Manx Grands Prix of 1946, ‘7, and ‘8, being a finisher on each occasion, with a replica in the latter Junior race of year he entered for the Junior T.T. but was a non-starter.
His mount for this year’s Junior is the same1947 Norton that he rode in the “Manx” two years ago.
In 1946, H. Rowell rode it into fourth place in the “Manx” Junior, whilst in the 1947 Junior T.T., G. H. Briggs brought it home into 16th place.
