Junior – Norton
Age 35 years. Occupation, Stationer and Tobacconist, at Little Bromwich, Birmingham. War job: In the R.N., serving in Landing Craft. Two years in the Far East. Commissioned January, 1943. Demobbed 1946 with rank of Lieut-Engineer – “and enjoyed every minute” he says. Hobbies: “Poultry and my ‘Ulster’ super-charged Lea Francis.”
Started grass racing in 1931 and won his first race. In 1936 joined O.K. Supreme and held every Midland track record in which he rode at one time or another between 1934 and 1939. In 1938 forsook grass for the speedway, but returned to grass in ’39 and had a very successful season, always riding O.K.’s His first and only road race prior to the War was the 1936 Lightweight M.G.P., in which he finished third after only four lap’s practice. In last year’s Lightweight M.G.P. “tried to take Greeba Bridge full bore, and finished on the back of my neck.”
