Biography: Age 24, Derek Woodman comes from Blackpool, where he is a toolmaker. He made his Isle of Man debut in 1956 using a 1956 Gold Star B.S.A., but his previous racing experience, principally gathered at Oulton Park and Rhydwymwyn, was with an ex-Ernie Barrett 250 c.c. Phoenix - Jap. In the 1957 Thruxton 9-hour race he finished second in the 350 class and fourth in the overall class. He was 59th in the 1956 Junior Manx, and 26th in the same event, in 1957, just missing a replica.

In the 1958 Manx races he finished 29th in the Junior, with a replica, and 25th in the Senior —but he missed his replica in the "Big Race" as only 22 were awarded. He was 11th in the 1959 Clubman's Junior race at Silverstone. In 1959 he finished 14th in the Junior and 27th in the Senior, whilst last year he was 15th in the Junior and 21st in the Senior, with a couple of "Reps."
