Sarah Johnson

Epithet: Sketchbook Artist (c.1830s)

Record type: Biographies

Biography: Sarah Johnson was thought to be sketching on the Isle of Man c.1830s. She is little known as an artist, however, had one exhibit from an album of watercolours at the Royal Scottish Academy in 1830.

It was common for upper-class women to sketch with watercolours during this period. The ‘Grand Tour’ of Europe was mainly undertaken by young upper-class men, but domestic travel was undertaken by men and women alike. Some of the most informative travel journals that have survived from the nineteenth century were written by women. Women of the aristocracy and gentry were amongst the earliest domestic tourists. It might be inferred from her sketches that Johnson came to the Island as a tourist.
