Record type: Biographies
Biography: Edouard Adam, born in 1847, painted ships portraits in the port of Le Havre around the same time as his son, named Edouard Adam Jr. Both Adams were official painters to the Department of Marine Services in Le Havre and earned reputations as skilled vessel artists. The senior Adam was prolific in his time, and is often regarded as the French equivalent of the master american ship portraitist Antonio Jacobsen. His fame even gained him a commission from Queen Victoria, as well as painting commissions of the Compagnie Generale Transatlantique Liners. He is noted for having recorded the crucial change in sailing vessels from wind-powered to steam-powered.
