Biography: Born on 20 February 1862 in Liverpool, he attended evening classes at the Liverpool School of Art and the Liverpool Academy while spending his days working in an office. He later studied in London and at the Academy Julian in Paris, where he exhibited prolifically. He exhibited at the Liverpool Autumn Exhibitions in 1881, the Royal Academy from 1886 to 1926 and with the Royal Society of British Artists, which he was a member of from 1892.
He was also a member of the Liver Sketching Club and went on to become its President in 1898, as well as eventually becoming President of the Liverpool Academy between 1912 and 1924. After World War Two he moved near Kendal and continued his successful career as an artist until returning to Liverpool and dying in 1958. His works are now owned and displayed across much of England, including in the Manx Museum.
