Robert Elliot Allen
Record type: War Memorials
Parish: Maughold
Town / Village residence: Maughold
Biography: Joined the 9th Queen's Royal Lancers. The engagement after which Private Allen went missing took place on Whit Monday, and according to a despatch from Mr John Buchan which appeared in the London Times , “the 9th Lancers, the most hardly tried regiment in the British forces that day stuck to their trenches through the gas and the subsequent shelling: but they paid a heavy toll.” Private Allen was the elder son of Thomas Allen, J.P., C.P., of Bell Vue, Maughold, and he went to the front, after spending some months in training early in May. He served his articles to the law with Mr F M La Mothe, Ramsay, and Mr Lay. It would appear that there is little doubt that Private Allen was killed by a German bullet on the date named.
