Biography: Kneen was born on the Isle of Man in 1862 as the fourth child of farmer John Kneen of Lezayre. He received an education on the Island and later moved to Manchester Grammar School, where he became assistant art master. Later, on the recommendation of Mr Walker, the High Master of Manchester Grammar School, he relocated to Westminster School and was appointed art master. He held this post for 37 years.

He usually exhibited at the English Art Club, the International Society of Sculptors and Gravers and the Goupil Gallery Saloon. He was well-regarded in his posts as art master and his obituary in the London Times reads, 'To those boys who have special ability, his guidance and counsel have been of inestimable value and of the greatest service.'
