Silver cigarette case presented to an Isle of Man Tourist Trophy (TT) rider
Date made: 1920
Description: This silver cigarette case was presented by Norton Motors in 1920 to Duggie Brown, a rider in the Isle of Man Tourist Trophy (TT) races.
It is hallmarked, and the lid is inscribed 'Presented to Mr Duggie Brown by Norton Motors Ltd in appreciation of his performance in the Tourist Trophy Race 1920'.
Duggie Brown was a popular local rider, and a member of the family which owned the Isle of Man Times newspaper. He finished second in the 1920 Senior TT race aboard a Norton. At that time, the TT races were a shop window for the British motorcycle industry. Manufacturers were eager to reward riders who achieved success aboard their machinery, such was the advertising potential, and gifts like this were commonplace at the time.
