Kella Mill, Lezayre

Date made: 1903

Artist: Knox, Archibald

Description: A watercolour view by Archibald Knox (1864-1933) of the whitewashed buildings at the Kella Mill at Sulby. Unlike most of his watercolour paintings which are untitled and unidentified views of the Manx landscape, Knox has written a title and date on the painting in his distinctive and intricate script 'KELLIA, VI. 03'. For most of his working life, Knox worked both as an art teacher and as a designer, but from c.1900-1904 he lived in a cottage in Sulby on the Isle of Man and produced many of his world famous metalwork designs for Liberty & Co. of London, for which he is most well-known. The painting is thought to be a study for a later painting of the mill building painted in August 1903 (IOMMM: 1954-5621).
