Maughold From the Churchyard, Isle of Man
Date made: 28 July 1854
Artist: Staples, S.
Description: "The general appearance of [Maughold village] is that of desolation and neglect. The few village urchins who were at play on our arrival speedily disappeared, the cottar’s huts seemed tenantless, the centre of the village was grass grown, and the walls covered with moss and native weeds.” (Dr Robert Paterson, Manx Antiquities, 1863, M 02321)
