The Curraghs?

Date made: n.d.

Description: "At twenty feet deep [in Ballaugh Curragh] trunks of immense oaks and firs lie embedded in the moss, all levelled in one direction, as if they had been prostrated by a torrent; while along with these are found a great variety of organic remains, seemingly coeval, and buried at the same time, with these forest patriarchs of an ancient world." (William Bennet, Sketches of the Isle of Man by A Tourist, 1829, M 00896)

Miss Georgina Gore Currie was the niece of Horatio Powys, Bishop of Sodor and Man from 1854 to 1877. Georgina stayed with the Bishop’s family at their residence, Bishopscourt, north of Kirk Michael. During her time on the Isle of Man, Georgina sketched and painted many Manx scenes including Bishopscourt and its gardens.
