Mug presented to pre-war (1907-1914) Isle of Man Tourist Trophy (TT) riders
Date made: mid 20th century
Maker: unknown
Description: A ceramic mug, white with blue transfer design 'pre war TT rider 1907-1914'. Mugs such as this were given to ex-riders at a reunion in the 1930s. This example came from Lady Hammett whose maiden name was Applebee, so the mug is probably connected with F.A. Applebee, winner of the 1912 Senior Tourist Trophy (TT) race. Applebee won on a two-stroke twin-cylinder Scott motorcycle. This was the first ever two-stroke Isle of Man TT win.
Frank A. Applebee's father Frank W. (known as 'Pa') Applebee was also racer and in 1922 became the oldest competitor in the TT races, when at the age of 60 he rode in the Lightweight race.
Ashtrays and other ceramic items with the same design are known to exist.
