Dead End Lambs
Date made: 1940
Artist: Miller, Harold 'Dusty'
Description: Satirical cartoon drawn for Isle of Man Times newspaper. Shows Manx lamb receiving naturalization papers as British subject.
This cartoon appeared on 26 October 1940. The previous weeks' newspapers had reported upon a glut of lambs produced by Manx farmers that year. The surplus was due to the lack of holiday visitors, and the over supply was made worse by the fact there was a shortage of shipping capacity for exporting them to England. However the Times newspaper of 5 October reported that restrictions on imports to England had been lifted (for many years it had been a bone of contention that Manx lambs were regarded as 'foreign') due to the war, and the surplus lambs were nearly all exported.
