Italian internee-made ship in a bottle
Date made: 1941
Description: A ship in a bottle (a fluted Kia-Ora bottle) with a wooden stand. Model of HMS 'Marlene' (a three masted ship) made by S. Monti (Salvatore Monti) of the Metropole Camp, Douglas.
Quote by donor: 'Purchased by myself, 1941, for the sum of seven shillings and sixpence from a shop in the Villa Marina Shopping Arcade, half way up on right hand side. In the window was a model of the battleship 'Prince of Wales' about 3 ft in length and made by an internee. Can't remember price but I know I couldn't afford it at the time'.
Salvatore Monti appears on the Home Office card index of enemy aliens. He is shown as 'Italian seaman Angelina Lauro' (this ship was interned at Liverpool on 10 June 1940 when Italy entered the war.) Monti confirmed as interned in the Isle of Man.
