Violin
Date made: 1897
Description: Musical instrument. This violin is made of maple, with a spruce top, ebony fingerboard and tailpiece, and boxwood pegs. It was made by local carpenter and violin maker Alfred or 'Alfie' Moore, and is a very well-made instrument. Label (handwritten cursive) inside violin reads: 'Alfred Moore Douglas 1897'. Alfie was a seafarer and carpenter and is described in the Journal of the Manx Museum 1932 as having ‘an inventive mind’. He designed yachts before he turned his attention to violins. The Journal says that ‘the best of Moore's work is very good indeed, particularly a set of four instruments which he made to the order of the Royal College of Music.’
