Description: “Ramsay is a small neat town of about 300 houses….It has a snuff manufactory, a brewery, a ropery, a tan yard, and a publick lime-kiln; assemblies are held during the winter; and a friendly society was established here in 1796. The land lets high near the town; the butter is good, but the cheese is very bad, and is so in general.” (John Feltham, A tour through the Island of Mann in 1797 and 1798, M 09791)
The painting is from a series of works by Mrs Lucy Emma Lynam, born 1834. It is thought that Lucy Emma Lynam painted the works while staying with her daughter and son-in-law on the Isle of Man. Her daughter, also called Lucy Emma, married a Manxman Sidney Alfred Pizey Kermode, who was the Reverend of Onchan (1862-1925).
