Ink drawing of Douglas Internment Camp riot
Date made: 1914
Description: A pen and ink drawing of the Douglas Internment Camp Riot with the inscription: 'In memoriam of the shooting of the German civil prisoners in the I.O.Man 19 Nov 1914 6 dead 19 wounded'. The ink drawing is on a cut down plain postcard and has been drawn in a very simple and sketchy manner to produce what appears to be an eye-witness account of the riot. The drawing depicts overturned tables and chairs, bodies on the floor, soldiers firing their rifles from one end of the dining hall (from both the ground floor and the balcony) and internees at the other end of the dining hall huddled together with their arms up in surrender.
The drawing was found by the donor in a box of old photographs that had belonged to his late mother. The drawing is very similar in style and handwriting to another hand drawn eyewitness account of the riot (MNH collection ID Number: M 07377f).
