Killeaba bowl
Date made: Bronze Age, 2000 BC
Description: This four thousand year-old decorated clay bowl was found in a burial mound at Killeaba, Ramsey. Pots were made using clay dug from the ground. One manufacturing technique was to build up coils of clay, smoothing the sides and then adding decoration.
This bowl has lots of decoration, including some thumb-nail shaped impressions, and some designs made from pressing a comb-like object and some rope or cord into the wet clay.
The pots were not glazed and sometimes residues of their contents are left on the inner surface of the pots. Analysis can sometimes tell us whether these residues were from meat, liquid or vegetables – maybe a meal to sustain the dead on their journey to the next life.
