Selection of paper bags with Manx trade names
Date made: 1976-1980
Maker: unknown
Description: These paper bags were collected from a variety of shops in Douglas and Ramsey in the 1970s.
The bags show the logos and trade names of the shops from which they were collected.
As a group they offer an interesting reflection of the nature of the high street on the Isle of Man in the 1970s and 1980s. Prominent are small, often family run concerns. Bakers and confectioners are also prominent, notably William Quirk & sons, J.J. Crellin, and the Ramsey bakery. In part these businesses grew up to support the requirements of the many hotels and boarding houses which made up the Manx visiting industry.
