Silver chalice from Jurby church
Date made: 16th century
Description: This silver chalice was part of the church silver from the parish of Jurby. The hallmarks show that it was made in London in 1521-22 AD. It has a simple engraving of Christ on the cross near the base of the stem and six flower motifs near the bowl. It would have been used during church services to take the wine during the Eucharist.
High class silver objects like this were commonplace during the Medieval period in religious establishments. Prior to the Reformation (which was embraced by Henry VIII only seven years after this chalice was made) churches would purchase, or be gifted, expensive church plate.
The Jurby chalice was purchased by the Manx Museum in the 1960s.
